Picturing America, an exhibition of 40 framed reproductions of significant American works of art spanning several centuries, will be on display at the Nassief House in Al-Balad from April 15-27. The American artwork will be displayed on the ground floor of the Nassief House alongside a historic retrospective of the Jeddah and Makkah region, which according to the US Consulate here, creates “a unique Saudi and American cultural exchange.” Picturing America, an arts and culture program organized by the US National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in coordination with the American Library Association, is currently on tour in the Gulf region. The forty images featured in the exhibition represent the work of American painters, sculptors, photographers, and architects ranging from early American Indian artisans to painter Mary Cassatt, photographer Walker Evans, and architect Frank Lloyd Wright offering a sampler of significant works that are a starting point for learning about American history and art. The forty works of art were carefully selected to represent America's artistic heritage and to offer unique insights into the character, ideals, and aspirations of the country. Picturing America was originally designed by the NEH to be used in American classrooms and to be displayed in the nation's libraries and community centers to give people a chance to learn about US history and culture in a fresh and engaging way by using art as a catalyst for the study of American social, cultural and political history. __
