Canadian Prime Minister unveils streamlined 23-member Cabinet
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 15 - 03 - 2025

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled his 23-member Cabinet on Friday during a swearing-in ceremony in Ottawa, significantly reducing the number of ministers from the 36-member Cabinet under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The shake-up retains key figures while introducing new faces, signaling a focus on "immediate action" and protecting Canadian workers.
The newly announced Cabinet primarily consists of returning ministers, while 18 ministers from Trudeau's government were not included in Carney's administration.
In a notable restructuring, Carney eliminated the position of deputy prime minister and merged several ministerial roles to streamline governance.
"This team reflects the ambition that makes Canada strong and it will work each day to protect workers, families, and businesses," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.
Carney emphasized his administration's commitment to efficiency, stating, "We are changing how things work, so our government can deliver to Canadians faster – and we have an experienced team that is made to meet the moment we are in. Our government is united and strong, and we are getting right to work."
Among the key appointments, Dominic LeBlanc was named Minister of International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs, while also serving as President of the King's Privy Council for Canada.
Melanie Joly retained her role as Foreign Minister and additionally took over as Minister of International Development, replacing Ahmed Hussen.
Former Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne was appointed Finance Minister, while Anita Anand assumed the role of Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. Defense Minister Bill Blair was among those who retained their positions.
Jonathan Wilkinson, known for his experience in environmental policy, was named Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland took on the role of Minister of Transport and Internal Trade.
Kamal Khera replaced Mark Holland as Minister of Health, as Holland announced earlier that he would not seek re-election. Public Safety Minister David McGuinty remained in his position, while Rachel Bendayan was appointed Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.
New additions to the Cabinet include Arielle Kayabaga, who was named Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Democratic Institutions, and Elisabeth Briere, who was appointed Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister responsible for the Canada Revenue Agency.
Carney emphasized that his Cabinet is designed for swift action and responsiveness to the needs of Canadians.
"This team is built for immediate action and focused on protecting Canadian workers, supporting their families, and growing this great country," he said. — Agencies
