Marriott Diplomatic Quarter a hospitality icon in Riyadh
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 22 - 06 - 2019

Witnessing rapid economic and social progress under Vision 2030, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is transforming into an attractive destination for businessmen, investors, and tourists from all over the world. The ripples created by this transformation have impacted every sector, including a flourishing hotel industry, where world-class accommodation options are emerging.
Dur Hospitality, a leading hotel and hospitality firm in Saudi Arabia, is aspiring to accommodate an increasing demand for upscale housing options that cater to the needs of visitors and extended-stay guests. It has recognized a unique opportunity at the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh, which houses foreign embassies and corporate offices, and is a lively and significant hub within the Saudi capital.
Subsequently, Dur opened the new Marriott Hotel at the Diplomatic Quarter in partnership with Marriott International, the world-famous hospitality chain, thus adding another accomplishment to its remarkable portfolio of hotel services present throughout strategic locations all over the Kingdom.
True to its context and pride of its roots, the hotel grew out from the strata of the ancient heritage of Wadi Hanifa, that inspired its design lines and character with a contemporary twist that blends the beauty of local Saudi tradition with the latest and trendiest architectural lines and features. It would be best described as a unique architectural conversation between the ever progressing high tech future and the highly praised local cultural heritage. The color palette is no different, as it combines the elements of the Wadi into a myriad of neutral tones, including beige, brown, gold, and is accentuated by sienna, giving the interior its real and bold identity.
To complete character, the marriage of tradition with contemporary continues within every interior aspect of the hotel, namely art works. These include a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and photographs created by 14 talented and renowned Saudi artists. This was key to achieving designs that continued the unique local story told from the architecture of the hotel. The artists were given the chance to claim their modern approach and showcase the beautifully complex Saudi culture in the hotel space.
The wide yet warm interiors provide a subtle and comfortable artistic experience for all categories of guests, with a focus on the new generation of travelers, who appreciate the gentle and subtle elements, rather than the extravagant. The spaces are generously lit with skylights, making it a sustainable and visually appealing walk, leading into the state-of-the-art guestrooms. These fall within the traditional yet modern identity of the hotel, as they are sharply designed with the latest furniture and tech requirements readily available, while fitted with the most engaging traditional artworks and accessories in sync with the general character.
Moreover, locally sourced art adorns the hotel interiors, with paintings, sculptures, and photographs contributed by 14 talented and renowned Saudi artists. Public spaces have been carefully constructed to be bright and spacious, and are enhanced by lavish skylights that allow in substantial natural light throughout the day. Guestrooms are modern and sleek, with modern fixtures and furnishings blended with traditional artwork and accessories.
The five-star hotel covers a total area of 25,000 m2, and encompasses 80 hotel rooms, 140 executive apartments, and an array of high-quality service facilities including a fitness center, a spa, a banquet hall for 400 guests, and an international-cuisine restaurant. It is the first LEED-certified project in the Kingdom, which reflects Dur's commitment to environmental wellbeing. — SG
