A damaged cruise ship with more than 700 people on board that was hit by a freak wave in the Mediterranean Sea docked at port in Sardinia on Tuesday, the Ansa news agency reported. The Bahamas-registered "Voyager" was escorted by Italian coast guards and arrived Cagliari port shortly in mid-morning. Its nearly 500 passengers, most of them Spanish nationals, were to be flown to Barcelona, where the ship was heading before experiencing trouble in heavy seas, the tour company Iberojet said. Ansa said the ship reached Cagliari at reduced speed because of a damaged rudder and engine trouble caused by an electric short-cut sparked by the freak wave that shattered the ship's navigation bridge windows. A statement issued by the French coast guard Monday said the Voyager was "in a difficult situation" in a storm between the Balearic Islands and Sardinia. Around 25 of the ship's passengers were reported injured. French authorities had despatched two planes and a tugboat and Spain had sent a tugboat and a plane to assist the stricken vessel. In addition, a British tanker in the area was diverted to come to the cruise liner's aid. --SP 1418 Local Time 1118 GMT
