U.S. stocks closed lower Tuesday. The dollar lost 0.85 percent against a basket of currencies. Light sweet crude oil for January delivery added 10 cents to $52.47 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while gold futures climbed $19.10 to $1,215.30. The Dow Jones industrial average declined 58.96, or 0.30 percent, to 19,826.77. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index decreased 6.75, or 0.30 percent, to 2,267.89. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 35.39, or 0.63 percent, to 5,538.73.
