U.S. stocks closed higher Tuesday, the first trading day of 2017. The dollar rose against a basket of currencies. Light sweet crude oil for February delivery dropped 2.6 percent to $52.33 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while gold futures gained $9.30 to $1,161 per ounce. Dow Jones industrial average added 117.24, or 0.59 percent, to 19,879.84. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 19.00, or 0.85 percent, to 2,257.83. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index increased 45.97, or 0.85 percent, to 5,429.08.
