Five Ethiopians who have attacked citizens just after they visited banks and stolen their money were arrested Friday after one attack left a man unconscious, Jeddah police said. The victim told investigators that he left the bank and was walking towards his car when the assailants attacked him, took a bag full of money and fled. Based on this information, police established a multi-faceted investigation conducted by the Financial Crimes Countering Section in the Criminal Investigations Department. One team collected information and monitored the movement of people near banks and cash machines while another team studied crime patterns and, with the help of sketches, focused on people who had been convicted of similar crimes. Later on Friday, the security team noticed a dark-skinned young man roaming around a bank on Sitteen Street in downtown Jeddah. He was kept under surveillance, stopped and taken to the police station, where the victim identified the young man as one of the attackers, according to police. The suspect initially denied involvement, but later admitted that he was one of the attackers and led security officers to four men he said were his accomplices, according to police. The man also told police that he and his accomplices used false identification papers, which made it easy for them to rent cars for use in the crimes and elude authorities. Jeddah Police Department Acting Official Spokesman First Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq said the five men are being held pending further investigation.
