COLORADO — Saudi scholar Faisal Darwish Al-Ghamdi has become the first Saudi student to receive the prestigious Larson Lab Award for his research in artificial intelligence. Al-Ghamdi, a faculty member at King Abdulaziz University and a graduate student at the University of Colorado Boulder, was named "Outstanding Graduate Student" for his work on artificial intelligence and digital twin technologies aimed at improving energy efficiency and advancing innovative building systems. His research focuses on digital twins, real-time virtual replicas of physical systems that use live data to simulate performance and optimize decision-making across an asset's lifecycle. The work supports the development of innovative buildings, where connected technologies manage systems such as heating, lighting and security to improve efficiency, comfort and operational cost control.
