Ayoon wa Azan (What is the Biggest Lie Today?)
Published in AL HAYAT on 26 - 07 - 2011

The racist, fascist prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, insists that the Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state before entering pointless peace negotiations with them; I will respond to him in today's column.
Perhaps Israel is the biggest lie in the recorded history of the world. To a country called Palestine, inhabited by a people bearing the same name, came the Khazars, via eastern and central Europe. They occupied, murdered and destroyed and displaced the Palestinians, on the pretext that it was the Promised Land and that they were God's chosen people.
Who said this? The Jews. Then came tribes who embraced Judaism; their roots were in the Caucasus, Poland, Germany and elsewhere, and they were followed by Jews from Arab countries. The result was that today there is an Israel, which never existed as a state on any land. The occupying conquerors, over the course of about a century, have failed to find a single trace of these people in historical Palestine, or Egypt, or Sinai, as the Old Testament claims.
A history student at any Western university will hear, as I did in the 1980s, that the Jewish prophets exist only in the Old Testament, and there is no trace of them on the ground.
I leave history aside and ask: What is the biggest lie today? It is that Israel represents a strategic support to the United States.
Professors John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt of the John Kennedy School of Government at Harvard settled the debate in their famous book, The Israeli Lobby, published in 2007. They said that after the end of the Cold War, in the absence of a superpower conflict in the Middle East, the United States no longer has a reason to justify pampering Israel with $3 billion a year, and selling it advanced weaponry, and using the veto in the United Nations Security Council 34 times since 1982; they said the official stance on Israel does not serve America's national interest. While there is a strong moral duty to support the existence of Israel, it does not have a great strategic value for the US and its disappearance will not put America's geographic and political interests in danger.
These are great, important words, from two American university professors of the highest academic level, but they are still lacking.
Israel gets about $10 billion a year from the US, and the $3 billion is only announced official assistance for five million thieves, compared to $1.5 billion in aid for 86 million Egyptians, so that their country retains its peace agreement with Israel. The US does not "sell" Israel advanced weapons; it gives them to Israel, because the entire cost is cancelled later. "The absence of Israel does not threaten US interests" – this is a very cautious notion, and might even be mistaken, because the disappearance of Israel will benefit US strategy, because Israel generates hatred of the US, and because all national liberation movements in our countries (Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and others) were the creation of Israel also. If it were not for this fascist state, there would have been no need for liberation, and terrorists would not have a reason for their terror.
Just as importantly, or even more importantly, the US has absolutely no moral duty to protect the existence of Israel, and I see no morals in supporting occupation, murder and displacement.
The comments were accurate about ancient history and the strategic interests of the US today. All of the rabbis of the world, and all 100 US senators and the 435 members of Congress cannot change this fact. Netanyahu can go "take a flying leap," as we say, with his lie.
I will tell readers a story about this that goes back to 2006, to the Israel attack on Lebanon in the summer of that year and its well-known defeat.
The prime minister of Iraq, Nuri al-Maliki, visited Washington at about the same time and delivered an address before Congress, asking for continued US support for his government. The members of Congress did not keep rising to applaud, like monkeys, when the war criminal Netanyahu gave his speech there this year. They asked the Iraqi prime minister to condemn Hizbullah, and he refused, despite the pressures he faced.
The result was that four senators wrote al-Maliki a letter, saying "your failure to condemn Hezbollah's aggression and recognize Israel's right to defend itself raise serious questions about whether Iraq under your leadership can play a constructive role in resolving the current crisis and bringing stability to the Middle East."
Among the signatories was Senator Chuck Shumer, who one day claimed that God appointed him a guardian of Israel, and not "his country" America.
To the Israeli war criminals and their facilitators in Congress, I can only say: "Peace in the Middle East: rest in peace."
