German federal police are being told to smarten up for this year's World Cup football tournament, getting rid of nose- rings, studs and weird hairstyles, the Interior Ministry in Berlin confirmed Saturday according to dpa. The dress code, to be announced in February, would remain in force after the sport jamboree, and would bring 30,000 transport police and federal detectives in line with more neatly turned-out state police forces. Among the fashion fads to be banned will be very short "three-day" beards, ponytails and ear-rings for men. Visible parts of the body were not to be pierced or tattooed, and each police officer would be allowed only one necklace or bracelet while in uniform. Policewomen are not to wear more makeup than normal women or ear- rings bigger than 5 millimetres across. The ministry told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, "We would like our forces to have a more consistent appearance." A spokeswoman said state forces already had dress codes and it was just coincidence that the federal forces were following suit in the year of the World Cup.
