With regard to the article "Giving jobs to women reduces job opportunities for men" (Feb. 12), are Muslim men so weak and emotional that we must give them jobs they have not earned? The ideas in the article favor giving jobs to men who may be corrupt, stupid or lazy, rather than giving employment to whichever man or woman can do the job best. Is that the society you want? One where men are given jobs they don't deserve, to coddle their weak emotions and keep them from becoming "aggressive or depressed"? Do you want a backward country of weak emotional men and second rate workers? These ideas are why Muslim countries lag behind. Mohammed, Online response In many countries, women have equal rights as far as jobs and education are concerned. What the writer says about women taking jobs from men is only true in economies with insufficient jobs in general. However, there is the principle that gender is not important, but competence is. When the woman is most competent, she gets the job. It is time for men to improve their own competence and increase the quality of labor in the country in general. Barthol, Online response
