Jaissle hails Al Ahli's spirit after AFC Elite triumph as Firmino savors 'special' title
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 04 - 05 - 2025

JEDDAH — Al Ahli head coach Matthias Jaissle expressed immense pride in his players following their 2-0 victory over Kawasaki Frontale in the final of the AFC Champions League Elite 2024/25, describing their performance as a triumph of resilience and unity.
"I'm extremely proud of the players," said the German coach after securing the club's first-ever continental title.
"They delivered an exceptional performance throughout the tournament. The atmosphere was electric, and the fans played a huge role in pushing us over the line."
Goals from Galeno and Franck Kessie — both assisted by Roberto Firmino — sealed Al Ahli's long-awaited breakthrough on the continental stage, with the King Abdullah Sports City roaring behind the Saudi side's relentless effort.
"The final wasn't easy," Jaissle admitted. "But we stayed focused, took our chances, and most importantly, kept a clean sheet. That was the key. The support from the fans was unforgettable — this win belongs to them as much as to us."
He declined to speak about next steps, saying: "Let me enjoy this moment first. Nights like these are why we work so hard."
Jaissle also referenced the challenging times earlier in the season when fan frustration reached a high: "Not long ago things were difficult, but the players never gave up. I thank them for their commitment, and I thank the fans for their patience and belief."
Firmino: "This title is special — we're champions of Asia"
Al Ahli captain and tournament MVP Roberto Firmino was emotional as he celebrated lifting the trophy, contributing directly to both goals in the final.
"I knew we had it after the second goal," said the Brazilian. "We worked so hard for this. I'm proud of the team, and happy for the fans and my family. This win is for everyone who supported us."
Firmino, who now holds both AFC and UEFA Champions League titles, added: "This is a special trophy for me. I want to be a legend here just like I was in Europe. The most important thing is that we kept our focus and played with heart."
Asked about his former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah, Firmino responded: "I miss him a lot. We made history together at Liverpool. If he's watching this — I'm proud of him."
On his position, the 33-year-old clarified: "I'm a striker, but I told the coach I'll play wherever he wants. My goal is always to help the team win — and that's what we did tonight."
