Worldwide coronavirus cases cross 38.8 million

Confirmed coronavirus cases have surpassed 38.8 million globally, with over one million fatalities and more than 26.8 million recovered patients, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University.
In the United States, COVID-19 cases crossed 8 million, rising by 1 million in less than a month, as another surge in cases hits the nation at the onset of cooler weather.
The US reported 60,000 new infections on Wednesday, the highest since Aug. 14, with rising cases in every region, especially the Midwest.
Over 217,000 people have died in the United States since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to a study.
In India, another global coronavirus hotspot, the total number of confirmed infections reached 7.37 million on Friday, having risen by 63,371 over the past 24 hours, the government data showed.
Deaths from COVID-19 infections rose by 895 to 112,161.
India crossed the 7-million mark on Sunday, adding a million cases in just 13 days. It has the world's second-highest tally after the United States.
Meanwhile, Mexico's health ministry reported 387 additional fatalities, bringing the total in the country to 85,285 deaths.
It also recorded 5,514 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infection, bringing the total number in the country to 834,910.
The government says the real number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases.
In Europe, France announced a record 30,000 new COVID-19 cases in a day on Thursday.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex made the revelation on Twitter, calling on French citizens to understand the seriousness of the situation.
"All of us have, within us, the possibility, by our behavior, to protect us, to protect others and to slow the circulation of the virus."
In France, a four-week state of emergency was re-introduced on Wednesday, with Castex revealing the extent of the measures the following afternoon
Daily coronavirus cases in England have increased by around 10,000 to around 27,900, according to government data.
Last week's estimate was 17,200 per day and the week before 12,600.
There has also been a big jump in the number of people infected in England — rising from an estimated 224,400 to 336,500 in a week.
The figures — covering Oct. 2 to Oct. 8 — are for private households and do not include people in hospitals and care homes.
"The estimate shows the number of infections has continued to increase rapidly in recent weeks," data showed.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Russia over the past 24 hours has increased by 15,150, the highest during the entire pandemic, the anti-coronavirus crisis center told reporters on Friday.
According to the crisis center, the relative daily growth over the past 24 hours has increased to 1.1 percent. The total number of infections has risen to 1,369,313. — Agencies
