The US reported 60,000 new infections on Wednesday, the highest since Aug. 14, with rising cases in every region, especially the Midwest.
Over 217,000 people have died in the United States since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to a study.
In India, another global coronavirus hotspot, the total number of confirmed infections reached 7.37 million on Friday, having risen by 63,371 over the past 24 hours, the government data showed.

It also recorded 5,514 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infection, bringing the total number in the country to 834,910.
The government says the real number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases.
In Europe, France announced a record 30,000 new COVID-19 cases in a day on Thursday.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex made the revelation on Twitter, calling on French citizens to understand the seriousness of the situation.
"All of us have, within us, the possibility, by our behavior, to protect us, to protect others and to slow the circulation of the virus."
In France, a four-week state of emergency was re-introduced on Wednesday, with Castex revealing the extent of the measures the following afternoon

The figures — covering Oct. 2 to Oct. 8 — are for private households and do not include people in hospitals and care homes.
"The estimate shows the number of infections has continued to increase rapidly in recent weeks," data showed.
