Worldwide coronavirus death toll put at 1,078,572 as cases cross 37.74m

More than 37.74 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,078,572 have died, according to a Reuters tally published on Tuesday.
With 214,584 deaths and 7,783,379 confirmed cases, the United States topped the list of 20 countries with the highest recorded infections and deaths in the world, followed by India, Brazil, Russia, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, Peru, Mexico, France, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Iran, Chile, Iraq, Bangladesh, Italy, the Philippines, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday reported an increase of 46,069 new coronavirus infections from its previous count, and said that the number of deaths had risen to 214,584. The CDC said that the total number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 7,783,379 since the outbreak of the pandemic.
India's total coronavirus cases rose by 55,342 in the last 24 hours to 7.18 million on Tuesday morning, the lowest daily rise since mid-August, data from the health ministry showed. Deaths from COVID-19 infections rose by 706 to 109,856, the ministry said.
India's coronavirus case load topped 7 million on Sunday and the country has added a million cases in just 13 days. It has the second-highest number of infections, behind the United States, which is approaching the 8 million mark.
Brazil confirmed 201 coronavirus deaths over the last 24 hours and 8,429 new cases, the nation's Health Ministry said on Monday, according to Reuters. The South American country has now registered 5,103,408 total confirmed coronavirus cases, from 5,094,979 on Sunday. Total deaths rose to 150,689 from 150,488 on Sunday.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 4,122 to 329,453, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Tuesday. The reported death toll rose by 13 to 9,634, the tally showed.
Russia's coronavirus cases rose by 13,868 on Tuesday, a new daily record since the start of the outbreak early this year, pushing the overall total number of infections to 1,326,178. The previous record of 13,634 new cases was registered on Sunday.
Russia's coronavirus crisis center also reported a record daily rise of 244 deaths from the virus, bringing the official death toll to 22,966.
In Vienna, the Austrian Health Ministry declared on Tuesday that COVID-19 infections tally of 57,324 after recording 1,028 new cases during the past 24 hours. The Ministry added that more than 44,056 patients had recuperated from the virus, whereas the death toll hit 855. There are 561 patients still receiving treatment in hospitals with 97 in ICU.
Because of the high number of cases, Austria has imposed precautionary measures lately to limit the virus from spreading to several provinces. It also issued a warning to wear masks in closed and open areas.
Indonesia reported 3,906 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday and 92 new deaths, data from the country's coronavirus taskforce showed. The new infections brought the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 340,622, while the death tally rose to 12,027, the region's highest number of fatalities.
Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019. — SPA/WAM
