Worldwide coronavirus cases cross 36.93m, death toll at 1,067,766
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 11 - 10 - 2020

More than 36.93 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,067,766 have died, according to a Reuters tally.
Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
In Mumbai, India's coronavirus case tally topped 7 million after it reported 74,383 new infections in the last 24 hours, data from the Health Ministry showed on Sunday, even as the spread moderated in western states such as Maharashtra, Reuters reported.
Deaths from COVID-19 rose by 918 in the last 24 hours to 108,334, the ministry said. India added a million cases in just 13 days, according to a Reuters tally of government data, and it has the second-highest number of infections, behind the United States which is approaching the 8 million mark.
In Moscow, Russia on Sunday reported 13,634 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, a new daily record that brought its nationwide tally to 1,298,718. The country's coronavirus taskforce said that 149 people had died overnight, pushing the death toll to 22,597.
Russia, which has a total population of around 145 million, has recorded the fourth highest number of infections in the world since the start of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, South Korea has decided to lower the tough virus curbs in place across the country since late August on views that the numbers of cases are slowing, the country's prime minister said Sunday, Yonhap reported.
The country designated two weeks ending that day as a special period for an intensive antivirus campaign due to concerns that new virus cases may resurge after back-to-back holidays, including a three-day Chuseok fall harvest holiday finish.
The country imposed the Level 2 social distancing measures, the second-highest on a three-tier system, in late August as cases spiked following a holiday and a mass rally that took place in central Seoul.
In Warsaw, new cases of the coronavirus exceeded 5,000 in Poland, DPA cited the Health Ministry as saying on Saturday. Some 5,300 people were newly infected and 53 deaths in connection with the virus were reported in the last 24 hours, according to official figures.
Most of the infections were registered in the Masovian region, which includes the capital Warsaw. Poland has seen some 2,972 deaths since the pandemic began. Since Saturday Poles have to wear a face mask in public areas, including outside, among other restrictions.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom recorded 15,166 new daily cases of COVID-19 today, on Saturday, a rise on the 13,864 cases reported the day before, Reuters cited government data as showing. A further 81 people died after testing positive for the virus within 28 days, the latest daily figures showed. — SPA
