Wiesberger storms into lead at Ballantine's
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 28 - 04 - 2012

Bernd Wiesberger of Austria shot a course record 7-under 65 to take the second-round lead at the Ballantine's Championship Friday.
Wiesberger, who has never won on the European Tour, took advantage of calm, early morning conditions to make seven birdies in a bogey-free round at Blackstone Golf Course. He leads by one shot from 2010 Ballantine's champion Marcus Fraser of Australia, who followed an opening 71 with a 67.
First-round leader Victor Dubuisson of France, who thrived in difficult conditions for a 68 on the opening day, carded 75 to slide to six shots off the lead.
Wiesberger's best tour finish so far was at Gleneagles last year when he made it into a five-man playoff for the Johnnie Walker Championship which was won by Denmark's Thomas Bjorn.
The leaders will be chased at the weekend by some experienced European Ryder Cup players.
Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, at 48 aiming to become the oldest winner in European Tour history, shot a 68 to move into fourth place, three shots off the lead. England's Paul Casey (72) and Ian Poulter (67) were five shots behind.
However, British Open champion Darren Clarke missed the cut after his first-round 77 was followed with a 72.
Tringale, Duke share lead
In New Orleans, Louisiana, Cameron Tringale and Ken Duke shared the lead at the $6.4 million Zurich Classic Thursday, with defending champion Bubba Watson six adrift in his first start since his Masters triumph.
Duke and Tringale both shot seven-under 65 on the par-72 TPC Louisiana course.
The leading duo were one stroke in front of South African Ernie Els, Sweden's Daniel Chopra and Americans Steve Stricker and Chris Stroud. Els made a birdie from a bunker at 18 to cap his 66.
It was another shot back to Ben Curtis, John Rollins and Jason Dufner on 67. Former British Open champion Curtis arrived in Louisiana fresh from victory in the Texas Open on Sunday, his first tour title since 2006.
Watson had four birdies and three bogeys in his 71. He admitted he was “mentally exhausted” in the wake of his first major title at Augusta National earlier this month.
England's Luke Donald, ranked second in the world, signed for a 73.
Crowded leaderboard
In Mobile, Alabama, Jennifer Rosales came alive with five back-nine birdies Thursday to join Lindsay Wright, Caroline Hedwall and Katie Futcher atop a crowded leaderboard in the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic.
The quartet were tied for the lead on five-under par 67, with another eight players right behind them on 68.
The Philippines' Rosales, who won the most recent of her two LPGA Tour titles in 2005, was even through nine before her late surge on the par-72 The Crossings course.
The big group on 68 was led by South Korean Sun Young Yoo, winner of the first women's major of the year at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
