Kohli's ton in vain as Gujarat comes out on top
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 25 - 04 - 2016

Virat Kohli's maiden T20 hundred went in vain as Gujarat Lions produced a clinical display to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets in their IPL match here Sunday.
Batting first, the RCB posted a challenging 180 for two as captain Kohli hit his first T20 century but the Lions chased down the target with three balls to spare with a combined effort from their top-order batsmen.
Dinesh Karthik steered the run chase for the Lions with an unbeaten 50 off 39 balls while Brendon McCullum (42), Dwayne Smith (32), captain Suresh Raina (28) made useful contribution as the home side notched up its third win in four matches.
The Lions, which had suffered a 10-wicket thrashing at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last match here on April 21, now have eight points from five matches.
Kohli carried the bat with an unbeaten 100 off 63 balls as RCB after electing to bat. Kohli struck 11 fours and a six in his superlative unbeaten knock.
Brief scores: Gujarat Lions 182 for 4 (Karthik 50*, McCullum 42) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 180 for 2 (Kohli 100*, Rahul 51*) by six wickets
Kolkata beats Pune
Before Sunday, Kolkata Knight Riders had won three games out of three while bowling first. On Sunday, they chased again, won again, and went top of the table in a tournament where chasing teams had won 17 out of 20 matches.
Chasing 161, it was coasting at 111 for 3 before it slumped dramatically, losing five wickets in 30 balls, and only sealed victory when Umesh Yadav struck a meaty straight six with five runs needed off the last four balls.
In his post-match interview, MS Dhoni said he was happy with Supergiants' total of 160, and thought his spinners had given the match away by bowling too full on a slow pitch offering plenty of turn.
Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 162 for 8 (Suryakumar 60, Yusuf 36; Bhatia 2-19) beat Rising Pune Supergiants 160 for 5 (Rahane 67, Smith 31) by two wickets. — Agencies
