Zamil bags Rabigh power plant contract
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 08 - 2011

Zamil Projects, a business unit of Zamil Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Services Company, has been awarded a new contract worth SR142.25 million ($37.9 million) from Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Company - one of Korea's largest heavy industrial firm and the EPC contractor for the Rabigh 6 project - to provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services and mechanical works for the HVAC systems and equipment at Rabigh Power Plant Stage 2, owned by the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).
The Rabigh 6 thermal power plant project site is located 150 kilometers north of Jeddah, with construction to be completed over six stages. When all stages are finished, the total generation capacity of the plant will be 2,800 megawatts - produced by four separate facilities, each with a 700-megawatt capacity. The new power plant will operate on a "Conventional Reheat Rankine Cycle".
"Regardless of economic conditions, the need for increased electricity production continues to expand. We are pleased to participate in this landmark project by supplying the most efficient and technologically advanced HVAC system components available in today's market," said Ahmed Zaatari, VP of Zamil Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Service Company.
"The Rabigh Power Plant is vital to expanding electricity capacity in Saudi Arabia. We are certain that its completion will benefit all parties to this agreement as well as all industrial and residential customers of Saudi Electricity Company," he added.
It is expected that the project will be commissioned in 2013, with final acceptance in December 2015. The positive impact of this contract on the company's consolidated financials will be evident upon completion of each stage of the project.
According to the agreement with Doosan, Zamil Projects will provide all essential HVAC system engineering, supply, installation, testing and commissioning services for approximately 46 buildings, including the gas turbine and boiler switchgear buildings, central control building, and central HVAC building.
Zamil Projects plans to use seawater instead of air as the principal cooling agent to extract the HVAC heat load from the plant. The location of the Rabigh Power Plant ensures an abundant supply of this natural coolant, which will provide the HVAC system with optimum energy efficiency, reliability and cost management.
In addition to Sea Water Cooled Centrifugal Chillers, Zamil Projects will deliver and install a variety of system components, including: emergency air cooled chillers, chilled water air handling units, double skin air handling units, package units, split units, fans, pumps, expansion tanks, DDC-type control system with BMS/workstation, as well as chilled water piping and ducting works.
