DSI clinches SR163 million Zamil contract
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 28 - 05 - 2008

Drake & Scull International L.L.C (DSI), a leading end-to-end service provider of electrical and mechanical engineering, today announced that Zamil Industrial has awarded it the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the District Cooling system within Saudi Iron & Steel Company (Hadeed), a wholly owned subsidiary of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC).
In November 2007, Zamil Industrial, supported by Energy Central - Saudi Arabia, signed a 22-year energy performance contract with SABIC for the complete outsourcing of process and comfort cooling and building plant to supply up to 20,000 tons of refrigeration at Hadeed.
DSI, through its Industrial Water and Power (IWP) division, will design and build the district cooling plant to centralize the entire air conditioning system, which currently consists of individual units. This will create significant energy savings of approximately 30 percent, and an increase in the overall efficiency of the plant. When implemented, the new system will be scalable thereby accommodating future expansion plans.
Khaldoun Tabari, chief executive officer of Drake & Scull International, said: “We are pleased to have won this contract. Drake and Scull has extensive expertise in designing and executing large-scale district cooling plants. Having successfully completed major projects across the UAE, we are looking forward to taking this expertise into new markets. Saudi Arabia is one of our focus markets and we are delighted to have been given this opportunity to utilize one of our core strengths.”
Abdulla Al-Zamil, chief operating officer at Zamil Industrial, said: “DSI was the ideal choice for the project, given their track record of delivering large scale district cooling plants, their in-house capability to design and execute the project, and their innovative and dynamic approach.”
District cooling technology as a whole continues to provide an energy efficient solution for all involved and makes a major contribution to the long term objective of controlling emissions and the possibility of reducing the overall demand on the electrical grid when utilized efficiently.
Drake & Scull provides integrated facilities management solutions to both private and public sectors and across a range of industries. The company offers mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) solutions, IWP, and civil contracting services across the region. __
