Former Uruguayan dictator Juan Maria Bordaberry died Sunday while under home imprisonment in Montevideo for his role in human rights violations during his time in power, dpa reported. Bordaberry became president in 1972 but dissolved Congress a year later and ruled by decree until 1976, when he was ousted by the military. The military regime stayed in power until 1985. In 2007, Bordaberry was first charged with his part in the murders of two legislators in Buenos Aires in 1976. Various other alleged crimes against humanity, including the enforced disappearances of people under the dictatorship and political assassinations, were the subject of an amnesty introduced by the civilian government in 1985. The former dictator served his detention under house arrest at home because of health problems. In March 2010 he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the 1976 murder of the two legislators. -- SPA
