Hijjah 04, 1431 / Nov. 10, 2010, SPA -- Notifiable infectious diseases killed 1,254 people on the Chinese mainland in October, the Ministry of Health said Wednesday. More than 500,000 cases of infection were reported last month, including one case of plague and nine cases of cholera, Xinhua quoted a ministry statement as saying. Last month, the plague and cholera killed no people. The two diseases are categorized as Class A infectious diseases -- the most serious class under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases. The only recent plague case was in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region in September, and that person has already recovered, the statement said. More than 280,000 cases of Class B diseases were reported last month, resulting in 1,222 deaths. Twenty two diseases are classified Class B. According to the statement, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, dysentery, and gonorrhea were the five most frequently reported Class B diseases in October, as they were in September. There were 220,000 cases of Class C diseases infections, causing 32 deaths.
