A chat show host was among five people arrested in raids by Hong Kong's anti-corruption squad, officials confirmed Friday, according to dpa. Stephen Chan Chi-wan, the flamboyant host of chat show Be My Guest and also general manager of Television Broadcasts (TVB), was detained along with four others late Thursday by officers of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). The five were held overnight for questioning, suspected of siphoning off up to 10 million Hong Kong dollars (1.2 million US dollars) from company production budgets. TVB confirmed Stephen Chan was among the arrested, who also included variety show producer Wilson Chin Kwok-wai, TVB's head of business development Wilson Chan Wing-suen, and TVB actor Ning Jin. The fifth person was the director of an advertising and production company. The Hong Kong Standard cited sources saying the allegations against Stephen Chan, 51, centred around a company he controlled that was contracted to arrange appearances for some of TVB's top artists. The artists are reported to have made appearances for free or at very low cost while the company received higher payments on their behalf and pocketed the difference, allowing it to make as much as 10 million Hong Kong dollars over a period of time. A ICAC spokesperson confirmed the arrest of five people, including four from the TVB channel, but refused to disclose further details. "The management of the television company has rendered full co-operation to the ICAC during the investigation. Inquiries are continuing," the spokesman said. A TVB spokeswoman identified the four involved from the company and confirmed they had been suspended from duty with immediate effect "pending further development." Chan's show has also been suspended.
