Published in Saudi Press Agency on 15 - 12 - 2009

Saudi newspapers focused in their editorials today on key issues on the agenda of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit now in progress in Kuwait city.
Al-Jazirah, Al-Watan, Al-Nadwah, Al-Madinah, Al-Bilad, Al-Yaum, and Al-Riyadh newspapers said in their editorials that when the GCC leaders meet in their summits, they do not merely resolve crises and problems that concern the Gulf region, but engage in solutions of all matters of concern to Arab and Islamic regions, noting that Arab and Islamic issues have been on top of agendas of the GCC leaders.
The papers indicated that security, political and economic crises surround the region and the world and that the GCC leaders in Kuwait focused on these matters.
The papers added that the GCC leaders will launch new economic projects that support the new economic course of cooperation, in particular the launch of GCC Inter-connection Grid in its phase I , which links the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar after the completion of construction of interconnection grid stations and their infrastructure in the four countries, pointing out that the total cost of the project is estimated at $ 1.6 billion and it will provide 5000 gigawatts of Electricity.

The papers noted that the establishment of railway lines linking the GCC countries is on the agenda of the GCC Summit for endorsement, adding that there is a thorough study on the economic feasibility, operational mechanisms, and routes of the railway network which makes this gigantic project endorsable.
The papers affirmed that this summit is considered a Summit of Launch towards an economic integration among GCC states, adding the Summit will set a timetable for the single currency.
The papers indicated that non-accession of two Arab Gulf states to the single currency will not remain an obstacle for ever.
