Various splinter groups having sympathies with banned extremist organisations are involved in series of suicide bombings in Pakistan, Interior Ministry Spokesman Brig (retd) Javed Iqbal Cheema says. Extremist elements want to destabilise Pakistan but their nefarious designs would be foiled at all costs, he told the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV). Cheema said the law enforcement agencies are diligently working out a plan to eliminate terrorism from the country in 2008. The government is committed to eliminate terrorism from the country till elimination of the last terrorist, the spokesman said. He said In 2007, 73 suicide attacks were made by culprits and two suicide blasts have occurred in the country this year .The law enforcement agencies have already worked out 60 percent suicide blast, he said adding that several people have been arrested and some among them brought to book. Terrorists involved in suicide blasts in Sargodha and Rawalpindi have also been arrested. At this stage further findings cannot be shared owing to various reasons. Security was being tightened further to avoid recurrence of deadly suicide blasts. Cheema urged the nation to remain united and further strengthen government s hand for exterminating the menace of terrorism and extremism from the country. The spokesman said target of Lahore blast was police not lawyers as the suicide bomber penetrated in police party and blew himself up there. He said findings of suicide attacks in Karachi and Ms Benazir Bhutto s rally would be shared with the nation once the inquiry is completed.
