Heavy rain and snowfalls continued to cause floods in several parts of Austria on Thursday, DPA reported. In the province Upper Austria, the river Enns flooded parts of the historical city of Steyr. The levels of the Danube started to rise in several parts of the country on Thursday. In Lower Austria, experts predict the Danube to rise to the highest levels in 20 years. Roads were blocked by floods or mudslides. Thousands of firefighters were clearing roads and flooded basements, the Austrian press agency reported. In higher regions in the province of Styria workers had to fight "waste-high" snow. In some areas of the country more than 150 litres of rain per square metre fell within 24 hours, almost twice as much as the monthly average. A second wave of heavy rainfalls is expected to reach the eastern parts of the country late Thursday night. An improvement of the situation was only predicted for Friday. For the period from Wednesday afternoon to Friday noon a total of up to 250 litres of rain per square metre is expected.
