President of the Council of Europe (CoE) Parliamentary Assembly, Rene van der Linden, said Monday that he had extended an invitation to Jordan's King Abdullah II to address the Assembly at Strasbourg, DPA reported. "His Majesty has accepted my invitation to address the CoE Parliamentary Assembly which comprises lawmakers from 47 countries," Linden said in an interview with the official news agency, Petra. Linden, who is visiting Jordan as part of a regional tour, met with the monarch on Sunday and reviewed with him latest developments in the region. Linden said that King Abdullah's efforts towards re-establishment of the Middle East peace represented "an important and constructive factor in the region's stability and prosperity". "Jordan, thanks to its moderate and balanced policies and its role as a safety valve in the region, provides an example that should be followed by other states of the region," he added. Linden called for a "more effective European role" in the Middle East. "We should mobilize our big capabilities, moderation and even-handedness in support of economic development and fighting poverty and unemployment in the Middle East," he said. The CoE Parliamentary Assembly chief expressed hope that the international conference proposed by the US president George W Bush this fall would "lead to the desired peace." "All concerned parties should realize that there is no alternative to peace," he said. Linden said that the Iraqi question posed "deep concern because developments in Iraq affect the entire region."
