United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday welcomed the decision by leaders of South and North Korea to meet in Pyongyang, saying it presents an opportunity to resolve long-festering conflicts on the peninsula. Ban said he believes that the summit "offers a significant opportunity for the promotion of peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and inter-Korean reconciliation," according to DPA. "I commend the two leaders for their initiative and hope that this positive development will give further impetus to the progress made recently within the framework of the six-party talks," Ban said in a statement. The summit will take place on August 28 in Pyongyang and will be the second time that the heads of state of the two sides meet since the end of the 1950 Korean War.
