The number of visitors to Jordan's ancient city of Petra reached an unprecedented level in April, reflecting growing interest in the rose-red city, one of the 21 finalists competing for the world's new seven wonders, a senior official said Tuesday, according to dpa. "Petra's visitors last month reached an historic level of about 81,000 - 49,000 foreign tourists and 32,000 Jordanians," Director of the Petra District Suleiman Farajat said. About 200,000 tourists visited Petra so far this year, compared with 357,000 last year, he added. Farajat pointed out that most of Jordanians who visited Petra last month were involved in a national voting campaign designed to ensure that the Nabataean city be chosen among the world's new seven wonders. The New 7 Wonders Foundation will announce the winners at an official ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal on July 7.
