The severe storm that struck northern Europe from the southwest left five dead in the Netherlands, dpa quoted emergency services as reporting today. Falling trees were responsible for the deaths of two people in a car and of two motorcyclists. The fifth victim was an 11-year-old cyclist blown into the path of a car. The last tailbacks on the motorways were cleared only after midnight Friday, although traffic authorities expected conditions to be normal Friday morning. Train services were completely halted Thursday evening, leaving tens of thousands of commuters stranded and dependent on local authorities for assistance. Rail authorities said passengers faced disruption Friday morning, with fallen trees on lines, overhead power supplies disrupted and trains in the wrong locations. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport cut back flights from the normal 70 per hour to 30 Thursday evening. The weather bureau called off the storm alarm shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday as the winds abated.
