UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan Monday called for continued support of the interim Palestinian government despite Israel's decision to freeze the transfer of tax and customs receipts to the Palestinian Authority, DPA reported. Israel decided to freeze the monthly 50 million dollars in tax and customs receipts, arguing that the Palestinian Authority is now dominated by the Hamas-led Palestinian legislature, which was sworn in on Saturday. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Annan spoke to officials of the European Union, the United States and Russia on the Israeli decision and they all called for supporting the Palestinian Authority. The UN, the EU and the two countries form the quartet on the Middle East peace process. Dujarric said the quartet "took note of the Israeli statement concerning the transfer of funds and they agreed that the quartet should continue to support the Palestinian government."
