The head of a West Virginia mine company Tuesday offered little hope for the rescue of 13 coal miners trapped underground after an explosion in a West Virginia coal mine, reported DPA. "The families are clinging to every hope for survival ... but the news has not been consistently favourable," said Ben Hatfield, president of International Coal Group in broadcast remarks. The early Monday morning explosion at the Sego Mine in Upshur County near Tallmansville occurred as workers arrived for their first shifts after the holidays. Teams have drilled one hole, and are drilling two more holes in an effort to reach the stranded miners. --SP 21 25 Local Time 18 25 GMT
