Around Europe, Paris's CAC-40 ended up 1.2 percent, Zurich's SMI rose 0.8 percent and Frankfurt's DAX closed 1.1 percent firmer. London's FTSE 100 closed up 0.9 percent after incorrect data from the index compiler initially showed a sharp fall in the index in the final minute of trade. UK stocks were supported by merger and acquisition talk, with Gallaher Group up 1.9 percent on renewed speculation that the British tobacco firm was a takeover target for Japan Tobacco .
