The Humanitarian Department (ICHAD) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held a consultation meeting with EU Humanitarian Department DG ECHO, on 10 February, 2022, in Brussels. The OIC Delegation was led by Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs and Special Envoy for Afghanistan Amb. Tarig Ali Bakheet. The delegation comprised OIC Permanent Observer to the EU Amb. Ismat Jahan, as well as Mohammed El Khamlichi and Al Haj Idriss Annour from the General Secretariat. The DG ECHO was led by Deputy Director-General Dr. Michael Kohler. The two sides exchanged views on ways and means to enhance coordination between the OIC and the EU in areas of mutual humanitarian concern. The discussions on main humanitarian policy and operational priorities for 2022 focused on humanitarian activities in Afghanistan, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, Rohingyas of Myanmar and the Middle East. The two sides examined prospects for promoting humanitarian cooperation in specific regions and emphasized the importance of continued coordination on these issues. The OIC Delegation also visited the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) of DG ECHO. At the end of the meeting, the two sides decided to further explore the possibility to formalise the relations between the two Humanitarian institutions.
