A scientific symposium, held in Riyadh, has highlighted the increase in number of people who went through psychological disorders as a result of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, something which was observed worldwide. Participants in the 13th Symposium for Psychopharmacology and Addiction Treatment, organized by Eradah Mental Health Complex in Riyadh, noted that the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to increasing the number of people diagnosed with anxiety, depression and Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) at the international level, due to the challenges the world was facing and the confusion in dealing with this pandemic. Experts highlighted the importance of offering psychological support and increasing opportunities for pharmaceutical and behavioral treatment for those people to help them recover from these disorders. Dr. Hassan Al-Shahrani, Director General of Health Affairs Directorate in Riyadh Region, said that the directorate gave much attention to psychological health, due to its importance in offering healthcare and rehabilitation services to psychiatric patients and addicts, including offering them psychopharmacological services. The symposium, which attracted international lecturers, discussed several aspects related to anxiety and depression disorders suffered by people who were infected with or suspected of contracting the COVID-19, administrating psychological impacts for consuming narcotics, psychological impacts of COVID-19 in the society, psychological impacts of COVID-19 treatments, actual need to expand the rehabilitation scope of drug and alcohol addicts and COVID-19 pandemic and OCD patients.
