More than 78.23 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,723,054 have died, according to a Reuters tally. India recorded 24,712 new coronavirus infections, taking its total to 10.12 million, data from the health ministry showed on Thursday. COVID-19 infections are decreasing in India, with 23,788 new infections reported on average each day, according to the tally. The country, which has recorded the second-highest number of infections in the world after the United States, saw a peak of close to 98,000 cases on a single day in September. A total of 146,756 people have died of the coronavirus so far, with 312 of those deaths occurring in the last 24 hours, the ministry added. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 32,195 to 1,587,115 and the reported death toll rose by 802 to 28,770, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Thursday. Russia reported a record one-day tally of 29,935 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday as well as 635 deaths from the virus, the most confirmed in a single 24 hour period since the pandemic began. Authorities have so far reported a total 2,963,688 cases and an official death toll of 53,096. A total of 1.001 million coronavirus cases has been registered in Ukraine as of Dec. 24, with 17,395 deaths and 631,435 people recovered, Ukrainian health minister Maksym Stepanov said on Thursday. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
