SABIC Develops Technology to Reduce Emissions Affecting Environment, Establishes Factory to Collect, Purify and Invest Carbon Dioxide
Published in Saudi Press Agency on 26 - 02 - 2020

The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) pursues its business sustainability, in line with its core values and ambitions, and paves the way to achieving the desired economic growth goals, taking into account environmental and social requirements.
SABIC is committed to taking a comprehensive approach to sustainability by promoting adequate resource use, circular economy, food security, innovation and environment protection, in line with the United Nations sustainable development goals, while the company's sustainable development roadmap forms an integral part of its strategy for 2025.
In the framework of this vision, SABIC has set, from the early stages of the sustainability program, a standard for measuring waste of materials helping it to reduce emissions affecting the environment, and devising innovative ways to use resources more efficiently. Its focus was on monitoring the most important opportunities to reduce material waste during the manufacturing process, including the release of materials in which carbon is a major component, such as carbon dioxide.
"SABIC" contributes significantly to collecting and storing carbon through integrated qualitative initiatives, including the establishment of the largest carbon collecting and purifying plant in the world in its subsidiary (United), through establishing of a plant to collect and purify up to 500 thousand metric tons of carbon dioxide resulting from ethylene glycol production processes every year. The purified carbon dioxide is pumped through a pipeline network for use in the production of highly beneficial products, catering to the needs of the food, beverage, medical and other sectors.
The new plant is the largest sustainability project to be implemented through joint cooperation between SABIC's many manufacturing sites. The second step was to enable near manufacturing sites to participate and benefit by building a network to transfer pure carbon dioxide to the sites of nearby subsidiaries for use in the manufacture of various products such as urea, chemical methanol, ethyl hexane, etc.
The project is currently achieving significant improvement in the resource use efficiency, while at the same time reducing the intensity of greenhouse gases associated with the operations, improving economic performance, stimulating similar solutions that can help build a sustainable future for the planet, enhancing economic returns, and enriching the social value provided by SABIC by increasing the quantity and quality of production capacity using the same amount of raw materials.
It also reduces environmental impacts at the same time and confirms the company's continued high value added in all dimensions of sustainability, reflecting its keenness to achieve its motto "Chemistry that Matters'' .
It is noteworthy that SABIC is a leader in the production of various chemicals and operates its industrial operations globally across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific Region, as it provides a variety of products, including chemicals, basic and specialty plastics, agricultural nutrients, and minerals.
SABIC supports its partners by identifying and developing available opportunities within the main final markets, for example, transportation, construction, medical devices, packaging, agricultural nutrients, electronics, and clean energy. The company operates in more than 50 countries around the world and its business is managed by more than 33,000 employees.
