Shares skidded in Asia on Monday after reports of a surge in new virus cases outside China. The decline followed a sell-off Friday on Wall Street. South Korea's Kospi dropped 3.9% to 2,079.04, while the S&P ASX/200 in Sydnay lost 2.3% to 6,978.30. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 1.6% to 26,865.61 and the Shanghai Composite index lost 0.3% to 3,030.25. Benchmark in Jakarta fell by more than 1% and India's Sensex lost 0.9% to 40,804.98. Japan's markets were closed for a holiday, AP reported. Benchmark U.S. crude lost $1.23 to $52.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It lost 50 cents to $53.38 per barrel on Friday. Brent crude, the international standard, gave up $1.42 to $56.52 per barrel. The U.S. dollar fell to 111.56 Japanese yen from 111.57 yen on Friday. The euro weakened to $1.0820 from $1.0847.
