Shares were mostly higher Monday, AP reported. The CAC 40 in France rose 0.5 percent to 4,700.70 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 1.3 percent to 25,485.70. India's Sensex gained 0.2 percent to 36,129.27. Australia's S&P ASX/200's benchmark slipped 0.1 percent to 5,646.40. Most other markets were closed for the New Year holiday. The future contract for the Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.9 percent to 23,233.00 and that for the S&P 500 also jumped 0.9 percent, to 2,507.50. Benchmark U.S. crude oil gained 59 cents to $45.92 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It advanced 72 cents to $45.33 per barrel on Friday. Brent crude, the benchmark for international prices, gained 84 cents to $54.05 per barrel. The dollar rose to 110.36 yen from 110.28 yen last Friday. The euro was flat at $1.1433.
