US Condemns Syrian Regime Assumption of Disarmament Conference Chairmanship, Calls for Holding Assad Accountable for Committing Barbaric Crimes against his People
The United States condemned here today Assad regime assumption of the chairmanship of the Conference on Disarmament, for four weeks, while the Assad regime continues to indiscriminately slaughter its people, with weapons, banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention. US called on all countries of the world to hold accountable Assad regime and those who commit barbaric crimes against their people. In an address, at the Conference on Disarmament, US Ambassador Robert Wood expressed his country's anger over Syria's assumption of chairmanship of the conference. Assad regime ignores its international obligations and violates the Chemical Weapons Convention, negotiated by this conference, Wood added. History of the Syrian regime, related to the use of chemical weapons, has been firmly established since 2011, which led to terrible humanitarian suffering, the latest of which was on April 7, in Duma, in a flagrant violation of the Security Council Resolution 2118, which demanded that Syria destroy all its chemical weapons' stockpiles and stop using them. Seven years have passed since the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of governors found that Syria violated its safeguards agreement for building a secret plutonium reactor, he stated. The Syrian regime, he further said, ignored the appeals of the director general and the IAEA board and obstructed investigations. US ambassador announced withdrawal of his country from the Conference on Disarmament meetings, during the chairmanship of Syria, for a period of 4 weeks, and will only follow up what Syria is doing during the period, and monitored practices that may be contrary to US interests.
