A record number of more than 130 countries are expected to sign the Paris climate agreement at a ceremony later this month marking the first day the document will be open for signatures, the UN said Thursday, according to dpa. More than 60 heads of state and government will attend the ceremony at UN headquarters on April 22 to sign the historic agreement aimed at curbing the impacts of climate change. After the signing ceremony, national governments will then go about officially approving the agreement. The agreement will enter into force 30 days after enough countries to account for 55 per cent of global greenhouse gas emission - a minimum of 55 nations - ratify the document. Some countries are also expected to deposit their instruments of ratification on the day of the signing. The number of countries signing the agreement on April 22 is expected to surpass the previous record of 119 signatures for an international agreement on opening day.
