U.S. stocks closed higher Monday as investors watched oil prices in the shortened holiday week. The stock briefly plunged 6 percent to hit a fresh 52-week low after news the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating another outbreak of a different E. coli strain at Chipotle. The dollar index extended losses against other major currencies. Light sweet crude oil for January delivery added 1 cent to $34.74 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while gold futures gained $15.60 to $1,080.60 an ounce. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 35, or 0.21 percent, to 17,164. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 5, or 0.24 percent, to 2,010. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index increased 18, or 0.36 percent, to 4,941.
