Japan is considering boosting the proportion of nuclear energy to 22 per cent of the electricity generation in 2030 despite public opposition, a report said Monday, according to dpa. The Industry Ministry is also considering more than doubling the proportion of renewable energy such as solar and wind power to up to 25 per cent in 2030, from 10.7 per cent in 2013, the Nikkei business daily reported. All 48 nuclear reactors remain offline since the 2011 triple core meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant that was triggered by a huge earthquake and tsunami. Regulators have so far green-lighted the restart of four nuclear reactors - two in central Japan and two in Kyushu - under updated regulations. Nuclear-generated electricity accounted for about 30 per cent of the Japan's output before the Fukushima disaster. Japanese power companies have depended more on fossil-fuel imports ever since.
