The powerful storm that hit Australia's north-eastern coast damaged hundreds of homes and cut power to 60,000, authorities said Saturday. Tropical Cyclone Marcia was moving south Saturday as a tropical low, with more rain, flooding and strong tides expected, dpa quoted the Bureau of Meteorology as saying. Marcia made landfall in central Queensland as a category 5 storm Friday, with heavy rains and gusts of up to 295 kilometers per hour. Queensland emergency services officials said at least 540 homes were damaged or flooded in the worst-affected areas of Rockhampton and Yeppoon. The weather bureau said a severe thunderstorm was affecting the Sunshine Coast and it warned of flash flooding in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. A weaker tropical cyclone, named Lam, made landfall in the Northern Territory as a category 4 storm Thursday. It brought sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour, and gusts of maximum 155 kilometers per hour, to the sparsely populated area. Lam weakened significantly as it moved inland, bringing heavy rain, authorities said. Flood warnings were issued for some areas Saturday.
