U.S. stocks ended mixed Monday, as an industry group report pointed to a gradual housing-market recovery. In world markets, European markets ended lower as Asian markets ended mixed. In U.S. economic news, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) said its pending home sales index gained 0.3 percent to 105 after falling 1 percent in August. The dollar rose versus the Pound, the Euro, and the Yen. Light sweet crude oil for November delivery fell to $80.70 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures fell to $1,228.80 an ounce. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 12.53, or 0.1 percent, to 16,817.94. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.95, or 0.2 percent, to 1,961.63. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 2.21, or 0.1 percent, to 4,485.93.
