AlHijjah 28, 1435, Oct 22, 2014, SPA -- Germany, Austria and Switzerland braced for floods and heavy snow Wednesday after the tail end of Hurricane Gonzalo wreaked havoc overnight, dpa reported. The storm blew roofs off buildings and disrupted traffic in southern Germany, authorities said. In the German states of Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria, 23 railway lines were shut down after trees swept onto the tracks, according to the railway company Deutsche Bahn. The storm could cause floods on the North Sea coast later Wednesday, a spokeswoman of the federal maritime traffic agency said. No casualties were reported after the overnight storm, which also ripped through Switzerland and Austria, turning mild autumn weather into an early onset of winter. Some 30,000 Austrian homes were without electricity for several hours in Tyrol province because of damaged power lines. Austrian meteorologists expected up to 1 metre of fresh snow in the mountains through Friday. Hurricane Gonzalo struck Britain on Tuesday, overturning vehicles, delaying ferries and forcing the cancellation of around 10 per cent of flights at London's Heathrow airport.
