Two policemen escorting health workers administering polio vaccines were killed in north-western Pakistan on Friday, officials said according to dpa. Gunmen on motorcycles opened fire at the team in Swabi town of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, police official Muhammad Riaz said. The incident was the latest in a string of attacks against polio workers in Pakistan in recent years. Polio has reappeared in parts of north-western Pakistan under the control of Islamist militants affiliated with al-Qaeda, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). More than a dozen health workers and police officials working with a UN-funded immunization campaign have been killed this year.
