The head of Italy's largest energy company, ENI, is under investigation for international corruption because of a suspected 200-million-euro (270-million-dollar) bribe paid to obtain business in Algeria, prosecutors said Thursday, according to dpa. Tax police officers searched the headquarters of ENI and of its subsidiary Saipem in Rome and Milan, as well as the private residence of chief executive Paolo Scaroni, who has been leading the company since 2006. Prosecutors are investigating ENI and Saipem contracts for projects worth 11 billion dollars, including for the construction of the underwater gas pipeline Medgaz linking Algeria to Spain. ENI shares on the Milan stock exchange lost more than 4.6 per cent on the news. -- SPA
