Afghanistan joins Central Asian group as observer

A Central Asian group led by China and Russia
admitted Afghanistan as an observer and Turkey as a dialogue partner
on Thursday, dpa reported.
Leaders of the six Shanghai Cooperation Organization nations
agreed to accept Afghanistan and Turkey following the two-day summit
in Beijing, Chinese President Hu Jintao said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that admitting
Afghanistan would be an important step towards reviving the war-torn
nation.
The SCO groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan
and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan joined Iran, Pakistan, India and Mongolia
as observer nations.
