United 5 points clear at the top
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 20 - 03 - 2011

LONDON: Manchester United moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League thanks to its late winner in a 1-0 victory against Bolton Saturday while second-place Arsenal only managed a 2-2 draw at West Bromwich Albion.
United was down to 10 men following Jonny Evans' sending off in the 76th minute when substitute Dimitar Berbatov capitalized on Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen's error to grab the winning goal in the 88th for his league-high 20th of the season.
Arsenal, which has a game in hand, scored twice in the final 20 minutes – through Andrey Arshavin and Robin van Persie – to claim a point at the Hawthorns but lost ground in its title challenge. Steven Reid and Peter Odemwingie scored either side of the break to give West Brom a two-goal lead.
Fifth-place Tottenham's push for a top-four finish was held up by drawing 0-0 at home to West Ham, which climbed out of the relegation zone with its point.
Wigan won 2-1 at home to Birmingham, which dropped to second from bottom, but remained in last place by a point.
Wolverhampton stayed in the relegation area despite its 1-0 victory at Aston Villa.
In other results Saturday, Everton beat Fulham 2-1, Blackburn scored a late equalizer to draw 2-2 at home to Blackpool and Stoke thrashed midtable rival Newcastle 4-0.
Dortmund drops point
Substitute Petar Sliskovic scored a late equalizer for Mainz in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund Saturday, as the home side protested that a key player lay injured.
Dortmund is provisionally 10 points clear of Bayer Leverkusen. Mainz remains fifth, behind Bayern Munich which earlier won 2-1 at Freiburg.
Munich remains fourth, two points behind Hannover which beat Hoffenheim 2-0 at home.
Other results: Hamburger SV 6, Cologne 2; Eintracht Frankfurt 2, St. Pauli 1; Werder Bremen 3, Nuremberg 1.
Mallorca tops Zaragoza
Mallorca beat a 10-man Zaragoza 1-0 on a second-half goal by Jonathan De Guzman in the Spanish league Saturday.
Mallorca's first win in three weeks lifted it to within one point of seventh-place Sevilla.
Zaragoza remained four points above the drop zone.
Lazio beats Cesena
Mauro Zarate scored the only goal of the game as Lazio moved back into the Champions League qualification places with a 1-0 win over Cesena Saturday.
Having lost its position in the top four for the first time since the beginning weeks of the season last weekend following its derby defeat by Roma, Lazio quickly set itself back on track.
