An Iraqi twin who was joined at the hip with her sister died Saturday after separation surgery here last month. The surgery last month took place at the King Abdul Aziz Medical City's National Guard Health Affairs unit. The conjoined twins, Zainab and Ruqqaya Naseer, were born June 5 in Najaf in southern Iraq. They were joined at the hips and had problems with their digestive and reproductive systems. King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, had the twins flown to Riyadh and paid for their surgery, which took place in mid-July. Abdullah Al-Rabeah, Minister of Health and head of the surgical team which carried out the surgery, said Ruqqaya had major pre-existing health problems, including a deformed skull. He said the surviving twin is in stable condition. Al-Rabeah has performed nearly 30 successful surgeries on conjoined twins from 16 countries.
